Between Facebook and previous years’ blog posts there are fair reminders that this year’s delightful temperatures are not guaranteed in January here. Chilly weather and rain are possible. This year most of Europe is experiencing warmer than usual days, with temperatures in the south of France of nearly 25 on New Year’s Day and Germany recording some highs over 20 degrees, the warmest  since they began keeping records in 1881. Naturally the response everywhere is mixed - this is lovely, but what is happening to the climate. And for Cyprus there is also the risk, some say expectation, of desertification due to decreasing rainfall, urbanisation, and increased water consumption - the latter two affecting most of the world, of course.
