The Middle East is a complicated area, with a history that goes back for milennia and disputes that long predate the Balfour Declaration. In recent years the US has taken a hyperactive interest that far exceeds its desire to prevent conflict and see justice done. As the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace puts it “During the Cold War America’s quest to dominate the Middle East was driven largely by the need to ensure the uninterrupted flow of its energy resources to America and its allies”. Cyprus, Egypt, Israel and - yes - Gaza have massive undersea gas resources and plenty of dispute over boundaries and methods of access and export.
