Sunday, January 1/2023

Sunday and 2023. Turns out, not surprisingly, that the little shop next door is open and, somewhat less predictably, that there is a Sunday Cyprus Mail. Not really worth the €1.80. It’s slim, biased in predictable ways, and mostly a cut and paste affair from other publications. Local stories leave the reader itching for a blue pencil to deal with grammatical errors and embarrassingly bad structure. But it’s still nice to have. Some of the opinion pieces are quite good and there are occasional syndicated columns by Gwynne Dyer (yes, available elsewhere, but still…). And you can’t do the puzzles in the online version but they’re good to have in the morning sun on the balcony where you can’t read the ipads anyway.

Make pancakes for brunch. Mainly because we have a carton of milk that went sour. Have bought a kilo of village (village being the standard term for whole grain with regard to flour or pasta or sometimes bread). Almost talcum powdery fine, which isn’t an asset, and the frying pan isn’t really big enough, but results not too bad. And side bacon here is lean enough it requires a little olive oil to prevent it from gluing itself to the pan. So tomorrow back to fruit and yoghurt.
